This is a hyper-meta post, but, frankly, I have finally gotten to the breaking point.
Dear Michael Langenmayr and the DailyKos staff:
STOP.
Your hyperbolic emails coming every day begging me for cash have crossed the line.
I have been supporting DailyKos for 15 years. I send $5 per month every month.
Now, that may not seem like a whole lot. But when you are essentially unemployed without any real means of support, owe nine-tens of thousands of student debt, are ineligible for unemployment and have an incurable major disease that’s ridiculously expensive but isn’t bad enough to qualify for disability, that $60 dollars a year means a lot.
I would think that someone there at the office could do a cross-reference of “people whose email addresses we have,” and “long-time veteran users who have been supporting DailyKos regularly,” and purge the first list of those on the second list. Hell, give me the two databases and I’ll do a mail-unmerge for you for free.
I finally opted out of emails from ActionNetwork today when I received three — THREE — email within seven minutes today, all titled “TIMOTHY TIMOTHY TIMOTHY” and then another seven hours later titled “This is a short but important email. Please read” all begging for five bucks to help close the fundraising shortfall. I’ll admit that I’m impressed that between 2:33 PM and 9:07 PM you dropped your shortfall from $147,714 to $132,570. That’s pretty good. But maybe we all need to brainstorm a better model for bringing in enough cash to keep the site afloat. Because all I will ever be able to afford is $60 a year.
And I gotta tell you. 21 emails in 21 days all asking essentially the same thing: “Gimme $5!” makes me feel like the little kid on the playground being mugged for my lunch money every day.
So, please, figure out another path. Because this current one sucks.
